The Longest Night of Your Trip, with Air New Zealand

A Couch for Your Child. A Table for Two. A Bunk of Your Own.

Your child has room to curl up beside you. Your partner joins you for dinner before you both turn in. You pull a curtain closed and stretch out, even with an Economy ticket.

On Air New Zealand, each is a way to spend the night before Auckland. Economy Skycouch turns a row into a cushioned place to lie down. Business Premier Luxe makes room for dinner for two. From late December 2026, Economy Skynest adds separately booked bunks on select New York flights.

There is time to appreciate the difference. Leave Los Angeles on a Sunday night, and you land in Auckland on Tuesday morning, crossing the International Date Line along the way. From New York, the nonstop takes roughly 17 and a half hours.

Before you choose a seat, think about how you want those hours to feel: close to your child, across the table from your partner, or tucked into a space of your own. Then put your flight budget toward the part of the night that matters most.business premier

Give Your Child Room to Curl Up

Your child stretches out beside you while you settle into a movie. Their blanket stays within reach. So do you.

For a parent flying with a young child, Economy Skycouch gives you room to change positions as the night unfolds. Three Economy seats have adjustable leg rests that lift to create a flat, cushioned surface. Raise them together for a couch, or individually as you switch between sitting, playing, and resting.

Fully extended, the space measures approximately 5 feet 1 inch long and 29 inches wide. The crew explains the setup, including the extra bedding, seat liner, and dedicated restraint kit.

That length helps you decide who fits. A small child can curl up beside you, while a tall adult needs to bend their knees. Flying alone, you can reserve the whole row for yourself. As a couple, consider whether you want to share that compact space or have more room in separate seats.

Your meals stay Economy, while the upgrade gives you the flexible row. Ask your advisor to compare your fares plus the Skycouch supplement with Premium Economy on your exact dates. For a larger family, compare a Skycouch plus an additional seat with two Skycouch rows, taking your children’s ages and everyone’s need for space into account.

Share Dinner, Then Close the Door

Your partner takes the seat across from you. There's room for both plates, and neither of you has to lean across an aisle to talk.

In Business Premier Luxe, the ottoman doubles as a guest seat, and the larger table lets you dine together. Your partner joins you from their own booked seat, turning the meal into time you can share before settling into separate beds.

Start with a New Zealand wine. The Business Premier culinary program draws on native ingredients such as horopito, the pepper tree, and mānuka, used for honey and wood-smoked flavors. Dishes change, leaving the menu on your departure to introduce its own taste of the country.

After dinner, slide the suite door closed and recline into a bed approximately 80 inches long, with a memory foam mattress topper and duvet on long-haul services.

Luxe is a paid seating option within Business Premier on aircraft featuring the new cabin design. If your priorities are individual flat beds and an easy conversation, consider the redesigned standard Business Premier middle seats, where a sliding divider opens between you and your companion.

Advisor tip: Have your advisor check the seat map before you pay for the experience you picture. “787 Dreamliner” alone does not identify the cabin design, and aircraft assignments can change before departure.

Book Four Hours Flat in a Bunk

You are happy with Economy for dinner and a film. Once the lights dim, you want somewhere to lie down.

Economy Skynest lets you spend on that part of the flight. Scheduled for select services between New York and Auckland from late December 2026, it adds a four-hour sleeping-pod session to an Economy or Premium Economy ticket. The concept earned Air New Zealand a place in Condé Nast Traveller’s Bright Ideas in Travel 2026.

You keep your regular seat. When your session begins, you move to one of six bunks between the cabins, settle under fresh bedding, and draw the curtain. Each pod is approximately 6 feet 8 inches long, with a personal air vent, reading light, charging outlets, and seatbelt. An amenity kit supplies an eye mask, earplugs, and Aotea hand cream from New Zealand.

The pods stack three high. Small steps and handrails lead to the top bunks, while the middle and lower bunks require different movements to enter. Review the airline’s access demonstrations before choosing a level, since getting into position can involve climbing, kneeling, or crawling.

Sessions are planned outside meal service, with one four-hour session per passenger per flight. Skynest is available to passengers ages 15 and older.

Advisor tip: Before you commit to the airfare, have your advisor confirm a Skynest flight, an open session, the supplement in your booking currency, and a level you can reach on your own. Then weigh the total against your other seating options. If you fly with a child under 12, another adult on your booking stays with them in the cabin while you sleep.

Keep Your Own Space Through the Night

You open your book, put your headphones on, and lean back. In the redesigned Premium Economy seat, a fixed outer shell keeps the seat ahead from reclining into your space.

If you want more room through dinner, a film, and a few hours of rest, this is the option to consider. The new design provides 41 inches of seat pitch, privacy wings, and storage for the things you keep reaching for. Bluetooth audio connects your headphones to the entertainment screen.

Premium Economy dining includes New Zealand wines, and priority check-in and boarding make getting settled easier. You stay in a reclining seat throughout the journey, with your own space to read, eat, and rest.

For a parent or couple comparing it with Skycouch, that's the decision: individual seats with more room, or a shared row you can reshape. Your advisor can price both and confirm the redesigned Premium Economy cabin on your flight. On eligible New York services, you can also add Skynest if you want a flat sleeping space for part of the journey.

Tuesday Morning, Auckland

A couch in Economy. A suite with a seat for your dinner guest. Bunk beds over the Pacific. Most long flights are something to get through. This one gives you stories before you’ve even landed.

Then the doors open on Auckland. By midmorning, the ferry is pulling out of downtown for Waiheke Island, 40 minutes across the Hauraki Gulf and home to more than two dozen vineyards. Your child claims the window again. Your partner picks the first winery. You, four hours of real sleep behind you, have the whole day to spend.

Tell your advisor who’s flying with you. They’ll choose the couch, the door, or the bunk, and have a room ready when you land.
