Enjoying Christmas in the bahamas

The Bahamas are located north of the Caribbean in the Atlantic and are made up of more than 700 islands, cays and islets. The most famous of the islands include Nassau, Paradise Island, Great Exuma and Harbour Island.

Every day is a beach day in the Bahamas. Year round, the beaches surrounding Nassau and Paradise Island are not only beautiful, but they also offer as much or as little activity as suits you. Snorkel in Nassau’s warm, crystal-blue seas. Purchase Bahamian delicacies at local hot spots.  Nearly every island of the Bahamas has its own magical coral reef protecting its shores from rough Atlantic seas, creating the perfect environment for snorkeling or scuba diving.

The average daily temperature during the month of December is 78°F, seldom dropping below 73°F. Because Christmas is widely celebrated in the Bahamas, sun-worshippers can soak up the rays on the white sand beaches, without having to sacrifice their favorite Christmas traditions. The holiday season in the Bahamas includes decorated trees, lights, gift giving, music, carolers and masquerades.

Things to do

Junkanoo: The Junkanoo Festival is celebrated on December 26th and January 1st and is a fantastic was to experience the local Bahamian art and culture. The parades begin around midnight and feature Caribbean music and colorful costumes and dancing.

The Hope Town Lighthouse: Located on the north central Elbow Cay Island of the Bahamas, the Hope Town Lighthouse and observation deck during Christmas time is completely covered in decorative lights, making it look like a huge Christmas tree.

Shopping: There’s nothing like finding the perfect Christmas gift while tropical breezes blow through your hair in a colorful open-air Bahamian market. Small vendors and large retail outlets dot the islands, making shopping in the Bahamas a real pleasure.

Pink Sand Beach: Explore Harbour Island’s famous Pink Sand Beach. Over three miles long, this beach is popular for horseback riding, snorkeling and simply watching the sun set over its soft coral sands – the perfect cushion for walking barefoot.

The Exumas: The Exumas offer visitors every sort of adventure. Drive your own ATV and discover the wild side of the Exuma. Visit Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, a 176-square-mile nature preserve between Conch Cut and Wax Cay Cut. On the Exumas, you can even swim alongside friendly pigs.
