5 Reasons to Visit Antarctica

Antarctica is a continent with no permanent human population, but where the natural world and wildlife are free to be just that- wild. It's the closest thing on Earth to another planet. Here's 5 other major reasons to witness the seventh continent:

1. Penguins

Eight species of penguin exist only in Antarctica, and some like the Emperor penguin are the most commonly recognized, while Rockhoppers are one of the smallest penguin species, and the smallest of the crested penguins.

2. Seals

Six different species of seal live thrive in Antarctica waters: Ross, Weddell, crabeater, leopard, fur and elephant seals.

Four of these Seal species are ice-habitat specialists, breeding on the sea ice in spring. Leopard and Ross seals tend to be solitary, whereas Weddell and crabeater seals form breeding groups or colonies.

3. Whales

Few things match the majesty of a coming up close and personal with a whale. The sights and sounds: a blue whale's song can theoretically travel several thousand kilometres, and at close range can be compared to a jumbo jet at take-off.

4. Ice

By definition, an iceberg is a massive piece of ice which has broken away from a glacier. Antarctica's landscape can be described as a sculpture garden of ice. Just like snowflakes, no two icebergs are the same. The stillness, silence, and then the sound of crash as the ice caves from a near by glacier.

5. Ice Shelfs and Caps

Because ice shelves are in contact with the atmosphere above and the ocean below, they are the most vulnerable component of the Antarctic environmental change. Fast ice forms ‘land fast’ phenomena such as ice shelves and grounded ice.
